I completely agree with you that one should not build everything on rented land. I teach a blogging course, and I always tell students to buy their own domain name and a website and make sure that their stuff is published there as well as elsewhere (contracts permitting of course). A very interesting post.
I think the length warning is so you know people will have to read the full thing online rather than in email. I've had that too. A bit disconcerting isn't it?!
Oh... also, no one is leaving Twitter. Not right now. It’s far too entertaining at the moment. Logging in to see what crazy hijinks Musk is up to at this moment. It’s like a sitcom.
“...I am moderately active in the Malaysian and American personal finance scene...” That sounds like a wild crowd. It’s a literal party waiting to happen at any moment.
I’m teasing. The crowd I fell into is a bunch of old guys who rebuild computers from the 80’s. I just like seeing the old machines and a more naive world when everything was still possible because it was all in front of us. Now, we have the technology to do what felt like science fiction back then, but parts of the reality we have collectively made is filled with nightmares. So, I find it soothing to look back with fondness on 8 bit machines.
I was really into Google+ when it was around and stayed on the platform until they kicked us off. After that, I spent probably a year trying to find a suitable replacement and just gave up. That’s when I turned to Twitter. If Twitter does disappear, I’ll wait to see which platform aggregates the most users and consider joining there, but at the same time it won’t bother me if nothing emerges. I should spend more time building my Substack anyway.
Thanks for diving into this, Liz! I haven’t even finished this post and already have some really helpful food for thought in all this!
