I loved the ad! Definitely an ad I wouldn’t skip and I wish more ads are like this. Also can relate with how people visit malls just to see festive decorations as happens here in Dubai too
Yeah, the message is so subtle! Interestingly the ad caused some controversy (I'm not exactly sure what), but the ad agency came out with research figures to show that they were depicting reality.
I honestly don’t see anything that would be controversial about this…seems to encourage people to value time with their family versus busyness at the expense of relationships
Haha yes, I don't know the full details of said controversy, except that the ad agency said in response that "they did their research". I can only deduce that the Chinese were complaining that they didn't like the portrayal that they prioritised careers over family. If I find out more I'll let you know. And I must say, yes, we tend to prize our career achievements so much we forget that what matters is time with our loved ones, not how many zeroes we earn. And I think this is a universal message, not just for the Chinese.
Oh I remember this heartfelt ad.. also bring a tear to my eyes..I understand this northern Hokkien too though I don't speak it (fellow northerner here!)... "tetapi" got me smiling :)
Can imagine that. :) Lucky me that my mother tongue is Cantonese, so I had more choices, hallo tvb! Though of course Malaysian Cantonese is also a bit different, even between north and south! Hope to catch the new Malaysian movie that speaks canto soon, which is also filmed in my hometown - the raintown!

This is so interesting. And I cried at the ad. Thank you.
You're welcome! Petronas ads were rather famous for being touching. ;)

Lu ho bo? I always warm when I hear my mother tongue, which you rarely rarely hear on TV!
