The Tencent Version is excellent. Physics and Math is a universal language, so it doesn't require an adaptation- the subtitles are sufficient.

Interesting take for me, as I on the other hand, read the book but did not watch the tencent version. I did check out their episode 1 but I just didn't have the time to watch what might be close to the book that I've just read. And the problem is, I'm one of those people who build the entire story visually in their mind while reading, hence making it difficult for me to appreciate another version of it in a show. In this case Netflix's version makes it easier because for one, it is in my opinion, a speed summary version just for entertainment. And since they split and made new characters, it got me guessing a bit on who would be playing what role, when it was not obvious initially. But I've been disappointed in many things too, but nonetheless enjoyed it just for fun. If we don't start complaining why Hollywood needs to always make ONE hero or ONE group to save the world when in reality we know, there's always many unsung heroes that come together instead. Of course, that would make a very expensive production...

You can spoil all you want in this thread.

In my own review I pointed out something which to me is soooo obvious

the three bodies are the China, Russia, USA

and the civilization you save may be your own

I've only watched the netflix trailers so far though they DO bring out the "save the civilization" line really well.

Regarding the CR aka GPCR

It's impossible to say anything about it whether a westerner or Chinese.

Partly because of time's passage. Partly because whatever you say WILL get shouted down. Partly because it's still very relevant: if I'm not at all mistaken daddy Xi was purged, sonny boy was sent to the countryside to actually meet the farmers and hopefully work with them instead of being a young spoiled prick. And was rehabilitated, whether formally or informally.

XJP's whole story line is something like "my dad wasn't a traitor". VERY Chinese, not at all comprehensible to Western culture.

So ... XJP has something to prove aka "remember your original commitment".

Fact that he has personal biographical experience with it is part of why you CAN talk about it but good luck actually getting anywhere.

Mao's intention was to keep the revolution rolling internally and externally.

One can debate whether it had that effect.

Westerners are all going to say Mao was power mad, cynical, manwhore.

So ... I don't think much of anything intelligent can be said about it.

To me it's self-reflection of CCP on its origin and also trying to figure out how to cope with its success.

All the westerners are gonna whine but the CCP went from succesful to more successful to HOLY SHIT

and now has the problem of dealing with its success.

Which westerners aren't even going to recognize, let alone admit.

Westerners also don't generally know the heart sutra: there is no knowledge there is no end to knowledge, there is no ignorance, nor an end to ignorance.

I think it would be very difficult to accurately convey the authors ideas to Westerners, lack of background cultural awareness.

I think MAYBE Chinese people can talk about the problem / issue of capitalist restoration, a capitalist in fact party. Maybe not.

I don't think anyone could talk about the trial of the gang of four in China.

Anyway I think they should rehabilitate Jiang Qing.

But what do i know? It's not my country, I'm not Chinese.

I found YOUTH 芳华 much better so far.

I've got almost 2 thirds through Tencent's Three Body Problem but I may have to put a pause on watching it since I'm so bad at finishing shows. I really enjoyed it and think it was well done but 30 45 minute long episodes is too many for a non show watcher like me 😂

I'm sure I'd share similar thoughts to the Netflix version as you if I were to watch it. I prefer reading anyway so maybe I should actually reas the books.

The novels (I only read the first before I gave up) are... long and drag on. I really appreciate the Netflix version. What's Tencent? And what really blows your mind that you-know-who is the "villain." Just... wow.

Oh, just saw the Tencent version trailer. Wild.
