Pointing my Substack publication to it now may limit what it can do, but for the time being, I am continuing to build domain authority while buying time. If I ever leave Substack, I can republish all the posts there (granted, it'll be painful then, or maybe not with AI nowadays :)).
But if one has the time and capacity, it's a good thing to have one's own site. Nowadays, AI makes it easy to build a site without using a CMS like WordPress, which I've used for decades and still use but never liked for its clunkiness. Or maybe it's not as easy for many—I should share some tips!
I am thinking of creating a headless CMS of sorts with AI, because I am a tad attached to my CMSes, bu it's true how easy one can have a static website now!
I agree with you. Last year I tried to stitch my domain to the substance (and use it as content management system) but substack asked me to pay $50 for this and I am not willing to pay. I used to use WordPress as my content management system (and I paid for it) but in recent years it fell short and very slow responded when issues came up. So I quit WordPress and use this substack for now. Thanks for writing about this.
Hello Khaidon! To be honest there are better, cheaper ways to have a website than wordpress, but I use it because I don't want to build something from scratch and manage the backend. One day, hopefully, static websites would be more beginner friendly and everyone would be able to just build one. Right now they make it too complicated for the likes of us, so we still end up using the usual services. Hope you can restart your website!
PS: With a static website, you can just pay US$10-20 per year just for the domain name!
I've changed platforms many times, and I still haven't learned (enough). All the points in this article are valid, and certainly I've obsessed over this issue a lot, but I thrive (and keep on writing) when everything else is easy! Creating my own website from scratch seems like too big a task for me (although I have created WordPress sites before), but I have at least backed up all my Substack articles on Google Drive.
